  • President Ram Nath Kovind nominated Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri as Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
  • NCC Limited, formerly Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd, an infrastructure firm, received four new orders totalling to Rs. 2,890.7 crore (exclusive of GST) in December 2018 from government agencies.
  • Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) reported that Sweden has been named the first best performing country in the CCPI 2019 list.The bottom five in the list are Saudi Arabia, U.S., Iran, South Korea, and Taiwan.
  • France‘s football team which last year defeated Croatia to win the World Cup were awarded the Legion of Honour, France’s highest award for “exceptional service” to the nation, in the New Year’s honors list.
  • The US had notified UNESCO of its decision to quit the organisation in October 2017 and had called for its “fundamental reform”. Israel followed the US in quitting UNESCO.
  • Ramakant Achrekar, who has honed a battery of Test cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar, died at his residence in Mumbai. He was 86.
  • The Union Cabinet approved the introduction of a Bill to modify the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) of Arunachal Pradesh. The bill proposes deletion of the Abor tribe from the state’s ST list ‘as it is the same as Adi’ tribe.
  • Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu launched the Prana Raksha web application developed by the Chittoor police at Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh. The app has been designed to save the lives of road accident victims and reach out to women in distress.
  • The Kerala State Cabinet decided to recommend the Governor to promulgate an Ordinance amending the Kerala Pravasi Welfare Act. The Act aims at providing a regular income for Non-Resident Keralites (NoRKs) returning home.
  • HDFC Mutual Fund has surpassed ICICI Prudential MF to regain top position after two years as the largest asset management company (AMC).
  • Syndicate Bank and SBI Life Insurance signed a bancassurance pact aiming to offer a comprehensive financial planning solution to its customers.
  • Bharti AXA Life Insurance started delivering policies and renewal premium receipt to customers via instant messaging platform WhatsApp as a part of its alternative service option to the policyholders.
